When it comes to public health issues, one of the often overlooked but crucial aspects is hospital waste management. Hospital waste management regulations are an essential component of the healthcare international system, as they directly affect the safety of patients, medical staff and the surrounding environment.
With this article, we want to shed light on regulations related to waste management and sterilization in health care facilities such as hospitals, research laboratories and medical offices.
Challenges in managing hospital waste, particularly those with potential infectious and environmental contamination risks, are a crucial issue in public health and environmental sustainability. The implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), enshrined in 2001 and active since 2004, is a key step in the fight against pollution caused by persistent chemicals.
This International Convention, also adopted at the European level by Regulation (EC) No. 850/2004, focuses on the reduction and elimination of POPs, which include dioxins and furans often produced by medical waste incinerators.
This has led to the evolution of treatment techniques, such as autoclaving, microwave treatment, and frictional heat treatment, which aim to sterilize medical waste while minimizing harmful emissions.
In addition, regulations stipulate that the emission of dioxins and furans from small and medium-sized incinerators must not exceed the minimum standard of 0.1 ng TEQ/m³, a goal that can only be achieved with appropriate treatment systems. These efforts are crucial not only for environmental protection but also for reducing human health risks caused by exposure to these toxic substances.
The Stockholm Convention has also influenced the management of hospital waste at the international level.
Regarding the management of medical waste in Europe, EU Directive 2022/2464 deals with the disclosure of non-financial information by large companies. As of January 1, 2026, all companies with more than 250 employees and a turnover of more than 50 million euros will be required to prepare a sustainability report, with the aim of giving greater prominence to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) issues.
International regulations regarding hospital waste management have several key objectives:
In conclusion, international regulations governing the management and sterilization of medical waste within health care facilities are vital to ensure public health, the safety of medical personnel and the protection of the environment.
