Environmental sustainability assessment of different strategies of infectious hospital solid waste management

We have commissioned an analysis to assess the environmental sustainability of two possible strategies of infectious hospital solid waste management and, consequently, to verify if our innovative solution is environmentally more sustainable than current practice.

The whole study was performed by a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach conforming to the LCA ISO standards 14040 and 14044:2006 [1,2].

The result of this report quantified a relevant environmental advantage of our technology, compared to the current strategy of hospital solid waste management.

The main strengths identified for the considered case study were:

  • The reduction of solid waste amount;
  • The avoided treatment at hazardous waste incineration thanks to the classification as urban waste after the sterilization on-site;
  • The simpler management of the waste which avoids a daily transport to the incineration;
  • The avoided loss of containers/boxes for waste maintenance;

These advantages are highlighted in the cases where the hazardous waste needs to be sent far from the waste production way for the incineration. Indeed, the environmental cost of the transport is added to the load of the treatment.
